Come join us in April to learn about the work our Tom McAllister Scholarship is currently funding, and the novel management tools our recipient, Alex Jensen, is developing to study the Bouy 10 fishery at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Alex is a PhD student studying Fisheries Science at OSU. His research intends to develop an integrated set of tools supporting sustainable Chinook salmon management in the Columbia River. Alex’s examination of genetic and physical trait-based differences between important runs of fall-run Chinook salmon may result in new fishery monitoring approaches. He hopes to use these findings to evaluate new harvest assessment models for the Buoy 10 fishery. Alex is also working to understand how patterns in angling participation can be used to balance trade-offs between fishery access and conservation, as well as how uncertainty can be formally accounted for in decision-making. Alex believes sustainable resource use requires an improved understanding of the biological, social, and economic aspects of Oregon’s fisheries, and hopes his research provides a stepping-stone for their integration.
