FCO Meetings Focus on Local

Your FCO Program Chair, Mike Radakovich, has tapped our rich local talent to bring you entertaining and useful fly fishing topics for our monthly Zoom Meetings. This month we will learn how to tye favorite flies for steelhead and trout from Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters’ Jack Hagan. Jack and his shop have been loyal supporters of the FCO/FFF annual auction and summer picnic. Please register (it’s free and easy!) and join fellow members to learn and practice Jack’s techniques. And this month the meeting opens early at 5:30 p.m. so you can participate in some “tall tales” before the tying demo starts.

60th Anniversary Creel Committee Dives in to Archives

Dr. Mark Metzdorff is leading our effort to assemble a new edition of The Creel in commemoration of your Flyfishers’ Club of Oregon’s 60th anniversary. Committee members include Rich Fitterer, Paul Franklin, Lisa Hansen, and John Pyrch. Thanks to efforts from Multnomah County Library’s Jim Carmin, the Creel Committee has received scanned newsletters and documents from the early days of the FCO that are housed in the library’s John Wilson Special Collections. Thus, stories from the early 1960’s to the present are under consideration. Committee members have split up the reviews and will come up with favorites to nominate for inclusion in the upcoming publication. Among the criteria for inclusion are excellent writing that draws the reader in, evinces emotion, and shares the best of our sport. If your memory hearkens back to a particular article in The Creel or Flyline that you would like the Creel Committee to consider, please drop an email to Lisa Hansen. Even if you don’t recall the exact year or issue, a description of the story might be sufficient for those of us combing through the materials. We are getting to know them pretty well! Thanks to Mark’s useful timeline and recent experience with self publishing, we should have a high quality FCO publication for members and other interested fly fishers in 2021!
