Editor’s Note: A small and enthusiastic group of steelhead fly fishers got together in February to learn some of the finer nuances of spey casting and fishing the iconic North Umpqua River. Our instructors included top women guides Mia Sheppard of Little Creek Outfitters and Kaitlin Sampsel of Humble Heron Fly Fishing and Fine Art. We had a grand time laughing, learning, and fishing in the snow. Memories of the weekend brought forth these silly limericks. LKH
Steelhead School Memories
I met a young fishing guide named Kait
Who tied her long locks in a plait
Her fish sense was keen
Her casting so clean
Swinging flies as her preferred “bait.”
Mia’s a guide who loves fish
She hunts them and looks for a swish
Her cast is a beauty
Especially her snap T
To cast like her is my wish!
