Premiering Here This Month! A Short FCO Video on the Warm Springs Reservation Salmon Fly Hatch
Club members Jeff Malzam and I fished with Jim Baldwin on the Warm Springs Reservation in late May guided by two of Matt Mendes’s guides, Joe Logan and Frank Day, who help during the short salmonfly season. We floated within the Reservation boundaries from just below Trout creek rapids to Whisky Dick. Al Bagley helped out with the shuttle and visited with his old clients. Jim and his crew fished two days – one in the boats and one in the truck. I joined them for the boat trip. We were fortunate to pick two of the warm days after a stretch of cool ones that kept the salmonflies hunkered down in the bushes. They were looking up the day we drifted. We had on top action at most stops using a variety of dry stone imitations. Norm Woods Salmonfly and a Norm Chubby Lady were my go to flies while Jim was using his bow and arrow cast with his renowned Tied Down Salmonfly under the trees ( which he has been using for at least 25 years). 3x tippet was in order to tame these wild fish. When things died down near the end of the day we switched to a euro rig in the last hole before the takeout and hooked 3 fish in 4 casts managing to land two of them using Pat’s Rubber Legs as the heavy point fly and Nick’s Fat Caddass on the weighted dropper. The River brought old friends together and cooperated with some nice catching.
Jim put this little video together which covered both days which was nicely done.

More Deschutes Adventures
Six enthusiastic trout fishermen set sail for an undisclosed camp on the Lower Deschutes for exploration and adventure. FCO members Jerry Brown, Lisa Hansen, Mark Metzdorff, and Robert Sheley were joined by friends Karl Konecny and Sue Safford in early May as a smattering of golden stones began to climb out of the river.
Highlights included Mark’s christening of his new jet boat, very successful fishing on the surface and below, keen reading of new water, great food, and challenging movie trivia tests!
Dr. Mark Metzdorff in the camp water.
Wildlife abounded including herons, osprey, nesting Canadian goose, and lots of chukars!
A good time was had by all!
